Knot Your Average Cub Night!

Our Cubs got hands-on with knots this week — and there was no shortage of teamwork, problem-solving, and laughter along the way.

We kicked things off by chatting about all the different ways knots are used — from sailing and climbing to fishing, crafts, and even weddings! Then it was time to get stuck in. Cubs rotated through four fun activity stations, each one focused on a different knot and how it’s used in real life.

Fisherman’s Knot & Reef Knot
Strawberry laces were the tool of choice here! Cubs used them to practise the Fisherman’s Knot and the Reef Knot — and once they nailed each one, they got to eat their “rope.” A sweet way to reinforce the learning!

Figure of Eight
At this station, Cubs learned how climbers use the Figure of Eight knot. They worked in teams to “rescue” an object by lifting it safely using ropes tied to a tarpaulin. Great practice — and a great challenge.

Clove Hitch
Using table legs and posts to stand in for mooring points, Cubs learned how to tie the Clove Hitch — a handy knot for securing boats. They even tested it under pressure to see how well it holds.

Round Turn and Two Half Hitches
For the final task, Cubs had to span a "river" using the Round Turn and Two Half Hitches. This one really brought out their communication and teamwork skills — and showed how reliable a good knot can be.

We finished off with every Cubs favourite game - helicopter!!!

By the end of the evening, everyone had picked up some impressive new skills — just in time for our pioneering session next week.

A big thank you to all our leaders and helpers who made it happen!
