Last week the Cubs enjoyed an evening focused on local history and map skills.
We welcomed Dr Jonathan Oates, Ealing Borough Archivist and Local History Librarian, who gave the Cubs a talk about Ealing’s past. Cubs learned about the borough’s coat of arms, our HQ’s history, and looked at old maps and photos, with plenty of questions along the way.
The Cubs then turned their hand to map reading, and learnt all about symbols, scales, grid lines, and different map types including Google, Ordinance Survey and historical maps. They then worked in teams to identify map symbols and give four-figure grid references.
To finish, the Cubs visited Montpelier Park and created their own detailed maps, including features, keys, and colour. They worked carefully to record what they could see and apply their new skills.
Thanks so much to our special guest and all the leaders and helpers.
