This week, the Cubs worked towards their Disability Awareness badge learning about different ways people experience the world and how we can make activities more inclusive.
They began by learning how to introduce ourselves in British Sign Language (BSL). Cubs practised signing “Hello, my name is…” and used the two-handed BSL alphabet to fingerspell their own names, then introduced themselves to the rest of the group.
Next, we looked at the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a symbol worn by people with non-visible disabilities to signal that they may need extra support or understanding.
We also played a game of “unfair volleyball.” Some players had to sit on the floor, sit on chairs, or stay silent during the game. After rotating roles, we discussed how the restrictions felt and how games could be adapted so everyone can take part.
We finished with a discussion about how the Scout HQ and the park could be made more accessible for people with different disabilities, with Cubs suggesting practical improvements that could help everyone feel included.
It was a thoughtful and engaging evening, with Cubs showing curiosity, empathy and some great ideas about how to make activities more inclusive for everyone.
Thanks so much to all the leaders and helpers.
