Scouts Take to the Water at Activity Camp

Over the first weekend of July, the Scouts headed off to the annual Water Activity Camp, taking the place of the usual Friday meeting for three days built around water, height, and a few sharp tools.

The centrepiece was sailing: small two-person dinghies, three Scouts to a boat, out on the lake learning to work together to keep the boat moving where they wanted it to go.

Just as popular was the high ropes course, a wooden tower strung with tyre swings, cargo nets and a climbing wall, where harnessed Scouts made their way up rung by rung with an instructor keeping watch from the platform above.

Back on solid ground, leader Terry ran an axe and knife safety session, giving everyone a proper grounding in handling tools with care, splitting logs and whittling under close supervision.

Evenings ended the traditional way, gathered together at camp as the day's activities were talked through and the next day's plans took shape.

With the last meeting of term coming up on Friday, this camp was a good reminder of how much the Scouts get from time away together outdoors, skills this group will carry with them all the way to summer camp in Wales.
